Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said (that is, he recited this verse: Allah Almighty says:) "Their sides forsake their beds; they call upon their Lord in fear and hope." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This refers to the servant standing (in prayer) at night (that is, offering voluntary prayers)."
Ahmad recorded it; the narrator named Shahr did not meet Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), and there is weakness in this narrator, though he has also been declared trustworthy. The remaining narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When this verse was revealed: (Allah Almighty says:) "Their sides forsake their beds", we were sitting in a gathering, and some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept offering (voluntary) prayer from after Maghrib until Isha; so this verse was revealed about it: "Their sides forsake their beds."
Al-Bazzar recorded it from his teacher Abdullah bin Shabib, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: It is mentioned in the Torah that for those whose sides forsake their beds there are things which no eye has seen, no ear has heard of, and which have never even occurred to the heart of any human being; and in the Qur'an the words about this are: "No soul knows what has been kept hidden for them of the coolness of the eyes."
Al-Tabarani recorded it from his teacher Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, who is da'if (weak).
