Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: (Allah Almighty says:) "Indeed, the recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive to spread corruption in the land is this." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: There was a covenant and a pact between some people of the People of the Book and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They broke the covenant and began spreading corruption in the land, so Allah Almighty gave His Prophet the choice concerning them: if he wished he could have them killed, if he wished he could have them crucified, and if he wished he could have their hands and feet cut off on opposite sides. As for banishment (nafy), it means fleeing in the land. If a person comes repenting and enters Islam, this will be accepted from him and he will not be held to account for the wrong he did before.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; the narrator Ali bin Abi Talhah did not hear from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Wherever in the Qur'an the word qatl comes with a doubled letter (tashdid), it means punishment, and wherever it comes without the doubling, it means mercy.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Sahl bin Ibrahim al-Marwazi, whom I do not know.
