Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: (Allah Almighty says:) "(They said:) If you are given this ruling, take it; and if you are not given it, then beware." (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said:) This refers to the Jews. A woman among them had committed adultery, and Allah Almighty had decreed stoning for adultery in the Torah, but they were reluctant to stone that woman, and they said: "Go to Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); perhaps he has some concession. If there is one, accept it." They came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Abu al-Qasim! A woman among us has committed adultery; what do you say about her?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is the ruling of Allah Almighty concerning the adulterer in the Torah?" They said: "Leave the Torah aside; tell us what ruling you have." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring me the one among you who has the most knowledge of the Torah which was revealed to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him)." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "By the One who saved you from the people of Pharaoh, and by the One who split the sea, saved you and drowned the followers of Pharaoh, tell me: what is the ruling of Allah Almighty concerning the adulterer?" They said: "The ruling of Allah is stoning."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and Ali bin Abi Talhah did not hear from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).
