Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said about this saying of Allah Almighty: Allah Almighty says: "And those of your women who commit indecency." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Such women used to be confined to the houses; if one died, she died, and if she lived, she lived, until the verse that is in Surah al-Nur was revealed: 'The woman who commits fornication and the man who commits fornication, flog each one of them with a hundred lashes.' And the Surah of the prescribed punishments was revealed, so whoever committed any such act was flogged and then released."
Al-Tabarani recorded it from his teacher Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, who is da'if (weak). Al-Bazzar recorded something similar, except that he narrated these words: "Such women used to be kept confined to the houses until they died. When Surah al-Nur was revealed and the ruling of the prescribed punishments was revealed, it abrogated that." The narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Musa bin Ishaq bin Musa al-Ansari, who is thiqah (trustworthy).
