A man from the Ansar narrated: Abu Qays passed away; he was one of the righteous people of the Ansar. His son Qays sent a marriage proposal to his (father's) wife. She said: "I used to regard you as my son, and you are one of the righteous people of your tribe; however, I will go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him about this." Then that woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Abu Qays has passed away." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke words of goodness to that woman. The woman said that his son Qays had proposed marriage to her: "He is one of the righteous people of his tribe, and I only regard him as a son." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to that woman: "Go back to your house." Then this verse was revealed: "Do not marry those women whom your fathers married."
Al-Tabarani recorded it from his teacher Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, who is da'if (weak).
