Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 10919

Razin al-Jurjani narrated: I asked Sa'id bin Jubayr about this verse: "And married women among the women." He said: "I have no knowledge about it." I asked al-Dahhak bin Muzahim about it and mentioned Sa'id bin Jubayr's answer to him. He said: "I bear witness that I heard him ask Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about this verse, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: 'It was revealed on the occasion of the Battle of Khaybar. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Khaybar, the Muslims obtained women of the People of the Book who had husbands. When a Muslim would intend to have intimate relations with such a woman, she would say: "I have a husband." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about this, Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And married women among the women."' What it means is this: intimate relations may be had with captive women from the polytheists; there is no harm in that." The narrator said: I mentioned this to Sa'id bin Jubayr, and he said: "He (that is, al-Dahhak bin Muzahim) has spoken the truth."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. I do not know Razin al-Jurjani, and the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
