Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest?" He said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated the question several times, then Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Ayat al-Kursi." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu al-Mundhir, may this knowledge be a blessing for you! By the One in whose hand is my soul, this verse has a tongue and two lips with which it declares the holiness of the Lord at the foot of the Throne."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
This narration is in the "Sahih" in abridged form.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Abu al-Salil narrates: One of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was narrating hadith to the people, and he narrated a great many, then he climbed onto the roof of a house and began narrating hadith to the people. He related that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which verse in the Qur'an is the greatest?" A man said: "Allah, there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining," that is, Ayat al-Kursi. That man says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his blessed hand between my shoulders until I felt its coolness in my chest. The narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his blessed hand on the middle of my chest until I felt its coolness between my shoulders. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu al-Mundhir! Congratulations to you."
Allamah al-Haythami says: Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: It reached me that once, in the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) had caught Satan. I went to Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked: "It has reached me that you caught Satan in the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." He replied: "Yes. Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) handed the dates of charity over to me, and I put them in a room of mine. I noticed that they were decreasing every day. I complained about this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: 'This is the work of Satan; lie in wait for him.'" Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I lay in wait for him at night. When part of the night had passed, he came in the form of an elephant. When he reached the door, he changed his form and entered through a gap in the door. He approached the dates and began gulping them down. I tightened my clothes about me and seized him in the middle, and I said: "I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger. O enemy of Allah, you came to the charity dates and are taking them, though the people have more right to them than you. I will certainly take you before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he will disgrace you." So he made a pledge to me that he would not do it again. The next day I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "What became of your prisoner?" I said: "He pledged to me that he will not do it again." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He will do it again; lie in wait for him." On the second night I lay in wait for him; he did the same, and I did the same, and he again pledged to me that he would not do it again, so I let him go. The next day I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to tell him about it, and there a man was announcing: "Where is Mu'adh?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "O Mu'adh, what became of your prisoner?" I told him about it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He will come again; lie in wait for him." On the third night I lay in wait for him; he did the same again and I did the same. I said: "O enemy of Allah, twice before you made a pledge to me, and now this is the third time. Now I will certainly take you before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he will disgrace you." He said: "I am a devil with a family, and I have come to you from Nusaybin. Had I found anything before this, I would not have come to you. Previously we used to live in this city of yours until your master was sent, and when two verses were revealed to him, those two verses drove us out from here, and we went to Nusaybin. In whatever house these two verses are recited, Satan will not enter that house for three days. If you let me go, I will teach you those two verses." I said: "Very well." He said: "One is Ayat al-Kursi, and the other is the final verses of Surah al-Baqarah, from 'Amana al-Rasul' to the end of the surah." Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I let him go. The next morning I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to tell him about it, and there a caller was announcing: "Where is Mu'adh bin Jabal?" When I came before him, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "How is your prisoner?" I said: "He has pledged to me that now he will not do it again," and then I told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what he had said. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The wicked one has spoken the truth, although he is a liar." The narrator says: So after that I would recite these two verses, and I never again found any decrease in those dates.
Al-Tabarani recorded it from his shaykh Yahya bin Uthman bin Salih, who is, if Allah wills, saduq (truthful), as al-Dhahabi said; Ibn Abi Hatim says: The scholars of hadith have criticised him. The rest of its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Malik bin Hamzah bin Abi Usayd narrates from his father, from his grandfather Sayyiduna Abu Usayd al-Sa'idi al-Khazraji (may Allah be pleased with him). He had a well in Madinah called Bi'r Buda'ah, into which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had put his blessed saliva, so they took glad tidings from it on account of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saliva and sought blessing through it. The narrator narrates: When Sayyiduna Abu Usayd had harvested the dates of his orchard, he put them in a storeroom, and a ghoul (that is, an invisible being) would come into his storeroom, steal the dates and spoil them. He complained about this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Usayd, that is a ghoul. Listen carefully for its movement, and when you hear it coming, say: 'In the name of Allah (seeking blessing), answer the Messenger of Allah.'" (He did so,) and the ghoul said: "O Abu Usayd, spare me from your burdening me with going to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I give you a pledge in the name of Allah that I will not come into your house again and will not steal your dates, and I will guide you to a verse: recite it in your house and we (devils) will not come near your family; and if you recite it over your vessel, we will not be able to uncover that covered vessel." Then the ghoul gave that Companion a pledge with which he was satisfied. The ghoul told him: "The verse to which I was to guide you is Ayat al-Kursi." And then the sound of wind passing from its rear was heard. When that Companion came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Although she is a liar, she has spoken the truth in this."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; all of its narrators have been declared trustworthy, though some of them are weak.

Imam al-Sha'bi narrates: Once Masruq and Shutayr bin Shakal were sitting in the great mosque. The people saw them, got up and came over to them. Shutayr said to Masruq: "These people have come over to us so that we may narrate some hadith to them. Either you narrate and I will confirm what you say, or I will narrate and you confirm what I say." Masruq said: "You narrate, and I will confirm what you say." So Shutayr narrated that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) told us: The greatest verse in the Book of Allah is "Allah, there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining" to the end of the verse. Masruq said: "You have spoken the truth."
Allamah al-Haythami says: I say: This narration will come in full under Surah al-Talaq. Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
