Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him to the Battle of Dhat al-Salasil, Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) kept the people from lighting fires for three days. The narrator says: The people spoke to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) about this and said: "Speak to him on our behalf." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him, and he (Amr) said: "They have sent you to me! Whoever lights a fire, I will throw him into it (the fire)." After that they met the enemy and routed them, but Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) did not even allow them to pursue the enemy. When they returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the people informed him about this and complained to him about it. He (Amr) said: "O Messenger of Allah, these men were few, and I feared that if they pursued the enemy, and the enemy had reinforcements, they might turn back and attack them." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praised his decision.

In one narration the words are: Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: "I forbade them from lighting fires out of fear that the enemy would gauge how few they were."
Al-Tabarani recorded it with two chains; the narrators of the first are the narrators of the Sahih.
