A man from the Ansar narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Horses are of three kinds. One is the horse that a man keeps tethered in the way of Allah: its price is a reward, riding it is a reward, lending it is a reward, and its fodder is a reward. One is the horse that a man keeps for contests and racing (that is, for gambling): its price is a burden (that is, a sin), riding it is a sin, lending it is a sin, and its fodder is a sin. And one is the horse that a man keeps for (personal) use, and it saves the man from poverty, if Allah wills."
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. Before this, the hadith reported from Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him), which Imam al-Tabarani recorded, has already passed; it has passed before this.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Horses are of three kinds: a horse for the Most Merciful, a horse for man, and a horse for Satan. As for the horse of the Most Merciful, it is the one that a man keeps tethered in the way of Allah: its fodder, its urine and its dung (after that he mentioned whatever Allah willed). As for the horse of Satan, it is the one on which a man gambles and which he takes to horse races. As for the horse of man, it is the horse that a man keeps tethered seeking to breed from it, and it is a protection against poverty."
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). If al-Qasim bin Hassan heard from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), then this hadith is "sahih" (authentic).

Sayyidah Asma' bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Goodness has been placed in the forelocks of horses forever until the Day of Resurrection. Whoever keeps one tethered as preparation (for jihad) in the way of Allah and spends on it hoping for reward in the way of Allah, then its being full, its having drunk, its thirst, its dung and its urine will be a source of success in his scale on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever keeps one tethered for showing off, for display, for exultation and for luxury, then its eating, its hunger, its having drunk, its dung and its urine will be a source of loss in his scale on the Day of Resurrection."
Imam Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Shahr, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Goodness and excellence (or nobility) have been tied to the forelocks of horses until the Day of Resurrection, and their owners are helped in looking after them. So pass your hands over their forelocks, pray for blessing for them, and put collars on them, but do not hang bowstrings on them." A narrator named Ali reported these words: "Do not hang idols on their necks."
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat in abridged form. The narrators of Imam Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy).
