عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ : بَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - إِلَى حَلِيقٍ النَّصْرَانِيِّ لِيَبْعَثَ إِلَيْهِ أَثْوَابًا إِلَى الْمَيْسَرَةِ [ فَأَتَيْتُهُ ، فَقُلْتُ : بَعَثَنِي إِلَيْكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ لِتَبْعَثَ إِلَيْهِ بَأَثْوَابٍ إِلَى الْمَيْسَرَةِ ] فَقَالَ : مَا الْمَيْسَرَةُ ؟ وَمَتَى الْمَيْسَرَةُ ؟ . وَاللَّهِ مَا لِمُحَمَّدٍ ثَاغِيَةٌ ، وَلَا رَاعِيَةٌ . فَرَجَعْتُ ، فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَلَمَّا رَآنِي قَالَ : " كَذَبَ عَدُوُّ اللَّهِ ، أَنَا خَيْرُ مَنْ بَايَعَ . لَأَنْ يَلْبَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ ثَوْبًا مِنْ رِقَاعٍ شَتَّى خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَأْخُذَ بِأَمَانَتِهِ [ أَوْ فِي أَمَانَتِهِ ] مَا لَيْسَ عِنْدَهُ " .

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to a Christian named Haliq so that he would give the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) some garments on the understanding that (payment would be made) when means became available. I came to that man and said: "The Messenger of Allah has sent me to you so that you give him some garments, (their price to be paid) when means become available." He said: "What means? And when will these means come? By Allah, Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) owns neither a bleating sheep nor a grazing camel." I returned and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When he saw me, he said: "The enemy of Allah has lied. I am the best of those who trade. That one of you should wear a garment made of rags is better for him than taking on trust (here the narrator is unsure of one word) something that is not his."

قَالَ : هُوَ الَّذِي لَا زَرْعَ لَهُ ، وَلَا ضَرْعَ - قَالَ : بَعَثَ بِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - إِلَى يَهُودَ أَسْتَسْلِفُ إِلَى الْمَيْسَرَةِ . فَقَالَ : أَيُّ مَيْسَرَةٍ لَهُ ؟ هُوَ الَّذِي لَا أَصْلَ لَهُ وَلَا فَرْعَ ! فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ ، فَقَالَ : " كَذَبَ عَدُوُّ اللَّهِ ، أَمَا لَوْ أَعْطَانَا لَأَدَّيْنَا إِلَيْهِ " .
وَفِيهِ رَاوٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ : جَابِرُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ . قَالَ : وَلَيْسَ بِالْجُعْفِيِّ . وَلَمْ أَجِدْ مَنْ تَرْجَمَهُ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ ثِقَاتٌ .
وَفِيهِ رَاوٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ : جَابِرُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ . قَالَ : وَلَيْسَ بِالْجُعْفِيِّ . وَلَمْ أَجِدْ مَنْ تَرْجَمَهُ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ ثِقَاتٌ .
Al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Bazzar have recorded a report like that of al-Tabarani from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to the Jews to obtain something from them on credit until means became available. A man said: "Where will he get the means from? He is a man who has neither root nor branch." I went back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about this, and he said: "The enemy of Allah has lied. Had he given to us, we would certainly have paid (him back)." The chain of this report contains a narrator named Jabir bin Yazid; he said: He is not al-Ju'fi. I have not found anyone who gave his biography, and the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
وَعَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ قَالَ : أَضَافَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - ضَيْفًا فَلَمْ يَلْقَ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - مَا يَصْلُحُهُ ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ : " يَقُولُ لَكَ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ : أَسْلِفْنِي دَقِيقًا إِلَى هِلَالِ رَجَبٍ " . قَالَ : لَا ، إِلَّا بِرَهْنٍ . فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ قَالَ : " أَمَا وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأَمِينٌ فِي السَّمَاءِ أَمِينٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ ، وَلَوْ أَسْلَفَنِي أَوْ بَاعَنِي لَأَدَّيْتُ إِلَيْهِ " . فَلَمَّا خَرَجْتُ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ : ( وَلَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَى مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِ أَزْوَاجًا مِنْهُمْ ) إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ ؛ يَعْزِفُهُ عَنِ الدُّنْيَا .

Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A guest came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and at that time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had nothing suitable for him. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to a man from among the Jews: "The Messenger of Allah, Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), says to you: Lend us some flour, to be repaid at the new moon of Rajab." He said: "No, it can only be given against a pledge." The narrator says: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about this, and he said: "By Allah, I am trustworthy in the heavens and trustworthy on the earth. Had he lent to me, I would certainly have repaid him." The narrator says: When I left him, this verse was revealed: "And do not extend your eyes toward the (worldly) enjoyment We have given to some groups among them," to the end of the verse. In it the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is encouraged to keep himself detached from the world.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Musa bin Ubaydah al-Rabadhi, and he is da'if (weak).
