Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 6616

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The protected zone (harim) of a well extends forty cubits all around it, all of it as a resting place for camels and sheep after they have been watered; the traveller is the first to drink; and surplus water shall not be withheld in order thereby to withhold pasture."
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator who is not named, and the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
