Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this from a person who saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he was going to Mina on the Day of Tarwiyah. Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was beside him, holding a stick with a cloth attached to it, with which he was shading the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Ahmad recorded it in this way.

Al-Tabarani recorded in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Makkah to Mina on the Day of Tarwiyah, going ahead of his procession. Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was beside him with a cloth fastened on a stick, with which he was shielding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from the heat of the sun. Both of these chains contain a narrator, Ali bin Yazid, about whom there has been criticism, although he has been declared trustworthy.
