Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Fadalah bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) state: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would be in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) at true dawn, then he would take a ritual bath (ghusl) and keep the fast.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a group of narrators whom I have not found anyone mentioning.

Abdullah bin Mirdas states: A man of the tribe came to me and said: "I passed by my wife on a moonlit night, and she pleased me, so I had intercourse with her in the month of Ramadan; then I slept until true dawn came." Abdullah says: I said: "Go to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) or to Sayyiduna Abu Hakim al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him)." The man went to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about this. He said: "You were in a state of major ritual impurity, and prayer was not permissible for you; then you took a ritual bath, so prayer became permissible for you, and likewise fasting became permissible for you."

In one narration the wording is: Abdullah bin Mirdas narrates that he came to the mosque of the tribe after the people had prayed, and that was in the month of Ramadan. He said to them: "I had intimacy with my wife, then sleep overcame me until true dawn came, and I had not taken the ritual bath (ghusl). What is your opinion about this?" The people present said: "We think that your fast has not counted." Then that man went to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about this matter. Then he came to the people and said to them: "I went to someone who is better than you (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) who has more understanding of the religion. He said: 'The fast is broken only by eating or drinking; complete your fast.'" I have not found anyone who mentions Abdullah bin Mirdas. The rest of the narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If I have intimacy with my wife at night and then deliberately leave the ritual bath (ghusl) until true dawn comes, this will not prevent me from fasting, because when I had intimacy with that woman she was lawful for me."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. I have not found anyone who mentions the narrator Yahya bin al-Harith. The rest of the narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.
