Iyad bin Marthad, or Marthad bin Iyad, reports from one of their people that he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: "O Messenger of Allah! Tell me of a deed that will admit me into Paradise." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is either of your parents alive?" until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had asked him this several times, and he said: "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then give water to drink." He said: "How should I give water to drink?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When people are present at the water, suffice them with the implement (the bucket) (that is, draw the water out for them), and when they are not present, carry the water to them." In one narration the wording is: "When people are present at the water, suffice them with the implement, and when they are far away, carry it to them."
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Al-Husayni considered the narrator Iyad bin Marthad or Marthad bin Iyad unknown. Al-Tabarani recorded it from him, that he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator is thiqah (trustworthy) and one of the narrators of the Sahih, so in this respect his being unknown is removed.

Asim bin Kulayb narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Iyad bin Marthad, or perhaps Marthad bin Iyad, narrating this hadith to a man: He asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about a deed that would admit him into Paradise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is either of your parents alive?" He said: "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him three times, then said: "Give water to drink: when people are absent, carry the water to them, and when they are present (at the water), suffice them (that is, draw the water out for them)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I draw water into my trough until I fill it for my camels, then a camel that is not mine comes and I give it water too. Will I get a reward for that?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is a reward with regard to every living being."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most virtuous charity is water. Have you not heard the saying of the people of Hell, when they seek help from the people of Paradise, they will say: 'Pour upon us some water, or some of that which Allah Almighty has provided you.'"
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Musa bin al-Mughirah, and he is majhul (unknown).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "What deed is it that, if I do it, I will enter Paradise?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you live in a place to which water is brought?" He said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then buy a new waterskin for the water, put water in it and keep using it until you wear it out; before you tear it, you will have reached through it the deed of Paradise."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Yahya al-Himmani; there is criticism of him and he has also been declared trustworthy. Its remaining narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Kudayr al-Dabbi narrates: A Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Tell me of a deed that will bring me near to Paradise and keep me far from Hell." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Should that (deed) do both of these things?" He said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Speak justly, and give what is surplus." He said: "By Allah, I am not able to speak justly at all times, nor am I able to give what is surplus at all times." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Feed people and spread the greeting of salam." He said: "This too is difficult." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you have camels?" He said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then take one of your camels and a waterskin, then go to a household that gets water only at intervals, and provide them with water. It may be that Paradise becomes obligatory for you before your camel dies and before your waterskin tears." The Bedouin went off saying the takbir, and before his waterskin tore and before his camel died, he was killed as a martyr.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Sa'd! Shall I not guide you to a charity that is easy to give and whose reward is great?" He said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Giving water to drink." So Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give water to drink.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Another hadith is reported from him about giving water to drink, other than this one; Abu Dawud narrated it.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Two men were crossing a barren wilderness; one of them was a worshipper and the other was a sinner. The worshipper became thirsty until he fell down. His companion began looking at him. His companion had a vessel with a little water in it, and he kept looking at the worshipper, who had collapsed. Then he said: 'By Allah, if this righteous servant dies of thirst while I have water with me, I will never receive any good from Allah Almighty; but if I give him my water to drink, I may die.' Then he put his trust in Allah Almighty and made up his mind; he sprinkled some of his water on him and gave him the rest to drink. The worshipper stood up, and the two of them crossed the wilderness. On the Day of Resurrection, the sinner will be brought forward for reckoning, and he will be ordered to be taken to Hell. The angels will be leading him away when he will see the worshipper and say: 'O so-and-so, do you not recognise me?' He will ask: 'Who are you?' He will say: 'I am so-and-so, who preferred you over myself on the day of the wilderness.' He will reply: 'Yes, I recognise you.' Then the worshipper will say to the angels: 'Stop.' They will stop, and he will come, stand and supplicate to his Lord, saying: 'O my Lord! You know the favour this man did me, and how he preferred me over himself. O my Lord! Grant him to me.' The Lord will say to him: 'He is yours.' Then the worshipper will come, take his brother by the hand and admit him into Paradise." Ja'far bin Abi Sulayman says: I said to Abu Zilal: "Did Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate this hadith to you from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied: "Yes."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and Ibn Hibban declared the narrator Abu Zilal thiqah (trustworthy), though there is criticism of him.
