Zakat al-Fitr

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says concerning the charity of breaking the fast (zakat al-fitr): It is due on every free person and slave, male and female, young and old, poor and rich: one sa' of dates or half a sa' of wheat. Ma'mar says: It has reached me
that al-Zuhri used to narrate it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Ahmad recorded it; its being mawquf (a Companion's statement) is authentic, and its being marfu' (attributed to the Prophet) is not authentic.

Sayyiduna Amr bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to order that the charity of breaking the fast (zakat al-fitr) be paid before he performed the Eid prayer, and he would recite this verse: "Indeed, he has succeeded who purifies himself, and remembers the name of his Lord and prays."
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains Kathir bin Abdullah, and he is da'if (weak).

Khusaylah bint Wa'ilah narrates: I heard my father recite this verse: "Indeed, he has succeeded who purifies himself, and prays while remembering the name of his Lord." He said: On the day of Eid al-Fitr, wheat is to be given at the Eid prayer ground before the prayer is performed.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains Muhammad bin Ashqar, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Amr bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Zakah (that is, the charity of breaking the fast) is obligatory on the Muslims: one sa' of dates, or one sa' of raisins, or one sa' of barley, or one sa' of cheese."
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains Kathir bin Abdullah, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered a man to announce loudly in the low-lying part of Makkah, ordering the payment of the charity of breaking the fast (zakat al-fitr), and to say: "It is a right and an obligation due on every Muslim, whether male or female, young or old, free or slave, town-dweller or desert-dweller: two mudd of wheat, or one sa' of any other food. And beware! The child belongs to the (owner of the) bed, and for the fornicator there is deprivation." In one narration the words are: "Or half a sa' of wheat. Whoever brings flour, it will be accepted from him, and whoever brings barley (meal), it will be accepted from him." Al-Bazzar recorded all of these narrations. Its chain contains Yahya bin Abbad al-Sa'di, and he has been criticised. The words of the narration: "Whoever brings flour, it will be accepted from him"
are narrated by al-Hasan from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both); the narrator al-Hasan is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain), but he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Zayd! Pay the zakah of your person (that is, the charity of breaking the fast) along with the people, even if you find only one sa' of wheat."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Awsat, except that he narrated these words: "Even if you find only a thread." The chain of this narration contains Abd al-Samad bin Sulayman al-Azraq, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Aws bin al-Hadathan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For the charity of breaking the fast, give out one sa' of food." The narrator says: In those days our food was wheat, dates and raisins. In one narration the words are: "(And) cheese."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains Abd al-Samad bin Sulayman al-Azraq, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The charity of breaking the fast is obligatory on every person: two mudd of flour or of wheat, one sa' of barley, and one sa' of sweet things, that is, dates and raisins."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains al-Layth bin Hammad, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to collect cheese as Sadaqat al-Fitr from the people living in the desert areas.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Kathir bin Abdullah, who is da'if (weak).

It is narrated from him that he said: I saw some Arabs who came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! We are people who own livestock, and we wish to pay their zakah; so will the zakah of Ramadan be sufficient on our behalf?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No! Pay it (that is, Sadaqat al-Fitr) on behalf of every young and old, free and slave, for it will be a means of purification for you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and al-Bazzar recorded it in abridged form. Its chain contains a narrator, Kathir bin Abdullah, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: We used to eat and drink and pay Sadaqat al-Fitr, then we would go out to the Eid prayer ground.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Khuzi, who is da'if (weak).

It is reported about Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) that in the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), she used to pay, on behalf of the members of her household, both the free and the slaves among them, two mudds of wheat or one sa' of dates; this was by the "mudd" with which the people conducted their dealings.

In one narration it is reported that she said: In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they used to pay Sadaqat al-Fitr according to the "mudd" by which the people of Madinah conducted their dealings; all the people of Madinah did this.
Ahmad recorded only the first narration, while al-Tabarani recorded all the narrations in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and part of them is reported in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. The narrators of its chain are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says regarding Sadaqat al-Fitr: It is two mudds of wheat, or one sa' of dates or barley.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Karim Abu Umayyah, who is da'if (weak).
