Prostration

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "As for me, I prostrate on seven bones, and I do not tuck up (my) hair or garment (during the prayer)."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Nuh bin Abi Maryam, and he is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We have been commanded to prostrate on seven bones and not to tuck up hair or garment (during the prayer).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Isma'il bin Amr al-Bajali, whom Imam Abu Hatim and al-Daraqutni declared da'if (weak). Ibn Hibban mentioned him in his book al-Thiqat.

Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas said: The servant has been commanded to prostrate on seven of his limbs: on his face, his two palms, his two knees and his two feet. Whichever of these he does not place (on the ground), there will be a deficiency to that extent.
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this narration. Its chain contains a narrator, Musa bin Muhammad bin Hayyan, whom Abu Zur'ah declared da'if (weak). Al-Dhahabi recorded his name with the letter "jim".

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Prostration is to be made on seven limbs."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Abu Umayyah bin Ya'la, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the whiteness of the side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was in prostration.
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, about whom there is some criticism.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went into prostration, he would hold his arms so far away from his sides that the whiteness of his armpits could be seen.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in all three books; the narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to prostrate on his palms.
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is as if the scene is still before my eyes today, when I saw the whiteness of the armpits of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as he went into prostration.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Adi bin Amirah al-Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went into prostration, the whiteness of his armpits could be seen. When he gave the salam, he would turn his face fully to the right until the whiteness of his cheek could be seen, and then to the left as well (giving the salam in the same way).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat as a lengthy narration, and in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir in abridged form, mentioning the giving of the salam; the narrators of al-Awsat are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Jabir said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to prostrate on his forehead together with the hairline.
Imam Abu Ya'la and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it, except that he (al-Tabarani) recorded these words: "on his forehead at the hairline." Its chain contains Abu Bakr bin Abdullah bin Abi Maryam, who is da'if (weak) because of his confusion (ikhtilat).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrating on the fold of his turban. Its chain contains Sa'id bin Anbasah; if he is al-Razi, then he is da'if (weak), and if he is someone else, then I do not know him.

Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Aqram narrates from his father, from his grandfather, that he said: I was grazing goats on the plain of Namirah when I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He halted there, had the iqamah called for the prayer and led his Companions in prayer, and I prayed with them. It is as if I can still see the reddish-white of the skin beneath the shoulders of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in prostration at that time.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir from Sayyiduna Aqram, in the same form as it is mentioned here, while Imam Abu Dawud and others recorded it from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Aqram himself; its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Yazid bin Abi Ziyad said: A man who saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith to me; he said: It is as if I am looking at him even now: when he was in prostration, he held his elbows so far away from his sides that I could almost see the whiteness of his armpits. Its chain contains a man who is not named.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in this form in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir.

It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he passed by a man who was in prostration with his hair tied up in a knot. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) undid it. When the man finished his prayer, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Do not tie your hair in a knot, for the hair also prostrates, and you will receive a reward for every single hair." The man said: "I only tied it up so that it would not get covered in dust." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If it gets covered in dust, that is better for you."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Kathir bin Sulaym said: I saw Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) prostrating on his turban.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; the narrator Kathir bin Sulaym is da'if (weak). Ibn Hibban stated in his book "al-Thiqat": Kathir bin Sulaym narrated from al-Dahhak bin Muzahim, and Abu Tumaylah narrated from him. And he stated in his book "al-Du'afa'": Kathir bin Sulaym is the one who is called Kathir bin Abdullah; he narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) things that are not from his hadith, fabricating them against him; and Allah knows best. No one other than Ibn Hibban declared him trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man should not wipe his forehead until he has finished his prayer, but there is no harm in wiping the sweat from his temples, for the angels continue to pray for mercy for him as long as the mark of prostration (i.e. dust and the like) remains between his eyes (i.e. on his forehead)."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Ayyub bin Mudrik, who is a kadhdhab (liar).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever does not place his nose on the ground along with his forehead when he prostrates, his prayer is not valid."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its narrators have been declared trustworthy, although there is disagreement about some of its narrators because of their Shi'ism.

Sayyidah Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty does not accept the prayer of one whose nose does not touch the ground (in prostration)."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Sulayman bin Muhammad al-Qafilani, who is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you prostrates, let him place his palms directly on the ground, so that Allah Almighty may grant him release on the Day of Resurrection."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Ubayd bin Muhammad al-Muharibi. Ibn Adi said: He has munkar (denounced) narrations from Ibn Abi Dhi'b. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This narration is one of them.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On a rainy day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, so that I saw the mark of the mud on his forehead and on the tip of his nose.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Suwayd bin Abd al-Aziz, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Juhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (while prostrating) placing his nose firmly on the ground just as he placed his forehead firmly.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains al-Hajjaj bin Artah, about whom there is some criticism.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you pray, do not spread out your forearms the way a beast of prey spreads them; support yourself on your palms, and keep your elbows away from your sides."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to be balanced in prostration and not to squat on our heels (with the feet upright).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Sa'id bin Bashir, about whom there is some criticism.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When one of you prostrates, he should not prostrate lying flat, nor sitting on his hip (tawarruk), for when he performs the prostration well, every limb of his prostrates (or: every limb of his takes part in that prostration).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Al-A'mash (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) praying in Makkah. When he went into prostration, he held his arms away from his sides, so that I could see the creases of his armpit.
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it; its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
