It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man asked: "How much water is sufficient for me for ablution (wudu)?" He said: "One mudd." The man asked: "How much water is sufficient for my ritual bath (ghusl)?" He said: "One sa'." The man said: "That will not be enough for me." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "May you lose your mother! This water sufficed one who was better than you, and that is the Messenger of Allah."
Ahmad recorded it. Discussion of it has already passed, and other hadiths have also passed, in the chapter which mentions how much water suffices for ablution and ghusl.

It is reported about Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked him about the ritual bath for janabah. He said: "Three (times)." The man said: "My hair is thick." Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was thicker and purer."
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Atiyyah, whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared thiqah (trustworthy), while a group declared him da'if (weak), though a mild weakening.

One of the people who had questioned Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Those people said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "We have come to you to ask you about three things: a man's offering voluntary prayer in his house, the ritual bath for janabah, and how far a man may be intimate with his wife when she is menstruating." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Are you sorcerers? Since I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about these things, no one has ever asked me about them, and now you have asked me (about these matters)." Then he said: "A man's offering voluntary prayer in his house is light, so whoever wishes may illuminate his house." In this narration he said: "The method of the ritual bath for janabah is that a man washes his private parts, performs ablution, and pours water over his head three times." About the menstruating woman he said: "He may be intimate with her above the waist-wrap." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah narrated from it the incident of "praying in the house".
Ahmad recorded it in this way through a man, from Amr, and he did not name that man.

Asim bin Amr al-Bajali narrates the following statement of Umayr, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Umar: Some people from Iraq came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What has brought you?" They said: "We have come to you to ask you about three things." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What are they?" They said: "A man's offering voluntary prayer in his house, what is it? How far is it permissible for a man to be intimate with his wife while she is menstruating? And we want to ask about the ritual bath for janabah." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Are you sorcerers?" They said: "No! By Allah, O Commander of the Believers, we are not sorcerers." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then are you soothsayers?" They replied: "No!" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You have asked me about three things which, since I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about them, no one other than you has asked me about until now." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "As for a man's offering voluntary prayer in his house, it is light, so illuminate your house as much as you can. As for the matter of the menstruating woman, what is above the waist-wrap is permissible for you, and what is below it is not permissible for you. As for the ritual bath for janabah, pour water with your right hand over your left hand, then put your hand into the vessel and wash your private parts and whatever has stained you, then perform ablution like the ablution for prayer, then pour water over your head three times, rubbing your head each time."
Abu Ya'la recorded it with this chain, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy); the narrators of Ahmad are likewise, except that it contains a person who is not named, so he is majhul (unknown).

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, I was eight years old. My mother took me by the hand and brought me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: "O Messenger of Allah! Every man and every woman of the Ansar has presented you with a gift, and I am not able to present you with any gift except this son of mine. Keep him (as a servant); he will serve you for as long as you see fit." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: So I served the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for ten years. He never once struck me, never once reviled me, never scolded me, and never frowned at me. The first advice he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me was that he said: "O my son! Keep my secret, and you will be a believer." My mother and the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to ask me about the secret of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but I would not tell them about it, and I will never tell anyone the secret of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O my son! Hold fast to performing ablution thoroughly; your two guardian angels will love you and your life will be lengthened. O Anas! Be thorough in the ritual bath for janabah, for when you come out of your bathing place there will be no sin and no fault upon you." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! How is this thoroughness to be done?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wet the roots of the hair and cleanse the skin. O my son! If you are able, always remain in a state of ablution, for whoever is overtaken by death while he is in a state of ablution will be granted the rank of martyrdom. O my son! If you are able, keep on offering voluntary prayer, for as long as you continue to pray, the angels will continue to pray for mercy for you. O Anas! When you bow (ruku'), place your palms firmly on your knees, keep your fingers spread apart, and keep your elbows away from your sides. O my son! When you raise your head from bowing, let every limb of yours settle in its proper place, for on the Day of Resurrection Allah Almighty will not look (with mercy) at the one who does not straighten his back between his bowing and his prostration. O my son! When you prostrate, place your forehead and your palms firmly on the ground; do not peck like the pecking of a rooster, and do not squat (iq'a') like a dog — (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) like a fox — and do not look here and there during prayer, for looking here and there during prayer is a cause of ruin; if there is no escape from it, then do so in voluntary prayer, not in obligatory prayer. O my son! When you leave your house, whoever of the people of the Qiblah your eye falls upon, greet him with salam; when you return, you will have been forgiven. O my son! When you enter your house, greet yourself and your household with salam. O my son! If you are able, spend your mornings and evenings in such a state that there is no deceit or rancour in your heart towards anyone, for in this way giving account will be easier for you. O my son! If you follow my guidance, nothing will be dearer to you than death."
Abu Ya'la, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir, recorded it, and it contains these additional words: "O my son! When you leave your house, whoever of the people of the Qiblah your gaze falls upon, assume that he has superiority over you. O my son! This is part of my Sunnah; whoever revives my Sunnah loves me, and whoever loves me will be with me in Paradise." Its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Abi Yazid, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Sunnah method of the ritual bath for janabah is that you wash your hand until you have cleaned it well, then put your right hand into the vessel, pour water with your right hand over your left hand, and wash your private parts until you have cleaned them well. Then place your left hand on a wall or on the ground and rub it, then pour water over it with your right hand and wash it, then perform ablution like the ablution for prayer.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy, except for Abdullah bin Muhammad bin al-Abbas al-Asbahani, whom I do not know.

Sayyidah Maymunah bint Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that she said: "O Messenger of Allah! Tell us the ruling on the ritual bath for janabah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wet the roots of the hair and cleanse the skin. The likeness of those who do not bathe properly is like that of a tree which water reaches, yet neither does its leaf sprout nor is its root watered. Fear Allah Almighty and bathe properly, for it is a trust that has been placed upon you, and a hidden matter that has been entrusted to you." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! How much water will suffice for the head?" He said: "Pouring three times with both hands joined together."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir through Uthman bin Abd al-Rahman, from Abd al-Hamid, and I have not seen anyone who has given biographical details of these two.
