Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: Which person has the most knowledge? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who joins the knowledge of people to his own knowledge; and every possessor of knowledge is hungry (for knowledge)."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Mas'adah bin al-Yasa', and he is extremely da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ibn Mas'ud! Which handhold of faith is the firmest? I submitted: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The firmest handhold of Islam is friendship for the sake of Allah Almighty, love for the sake of Allah Almighty and hatred for the sake of Allah Almighty. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ibn Mas'ud! I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Here I am. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you know which of the people is most excellent? I submitted that Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The most excellent of people is the one who does the most excellent deeds (or the one who is most excellent in deeds), provided that he has understanding of the religion (that is, he is a scholar). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ibn Mas'ud! I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Here I am. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you know which of the people has the most knowledge? I submitted: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The person with the most knowledge among people is the one who has the most insight into the truth when people differ, even if his deeds are few and even if he drags himself along on his buttocks. Those before you fell into disagreement and split into 72 sects, of which three groups attained salvation and all the rest were destroyed. One group rebelled against the rulers and fought them over their own religion and the religion of Sayyiduna Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him); those rulers seized them, killed them as martyrs and sawed them apart with saws. And among them was a group that had no strength to confront the rulers, nor could they live among those rulers and invite other people to the religion of Allah and the religion of Sayyiduna Isa (peace be upon him), so they began travelling through various lands and adopted monasticism. These are the people about whom Allah Almighty said: "And monasticism they invented only to seek the pleasure of Allah Almighty; We did not prescribe it (monasticism) for them." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever believes in me, follows me and affirms me has observed it as it ought to be observed, and those who do not follow me, they are the ones who will be destroyed.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Saghir; its chain contains a narrator, Uqayl bin al-Ja'd; al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) says: He is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected).
