It is narrated from Ikrimah (regarding the saying of Allah Almighty): "And We did not make the vision which We showed you except as a trial for people." Ikrimah says: This is something that was shown to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was awake; he saw it with his physical eyes. This was when he was taken to Bayt al-Maqdis.
Imam Ahmad recorded it as a "mawquf" narration on Ikrimah, and its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Ishaq, who is a mudallis (one who conceals a gap in the chain).

It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saw his Lord." Ikrimah narrates: I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Did Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) see his Lord?" He replied: "Yes! Allah Almighty specified speech for Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him), intimate friendship (khullah, that is, being Khalil) for Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and the seeing (of Him) for Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Hafs bin Umar al-Adani. Ibn Abi Hatim transmitted a declaration of his trustworthiness from Abu Abdullah al-Tihrani, while Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and others declared him da'if (weak).
