Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) set out with him as well. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) took all his wealth with him, which came to five thousand dirhams, or perhaps six thousand dirhams; he took that sum with him. Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Our grandfather, Sayyiduna Abu Quhafah (may Allah be pleased with him), came to us; his eyesight had gone. He said: "By Allah, I think that Abu Bakr has left you and taken all the wealth with him." I said: "Not at all, grandfather! He has left a great deal of good for us." Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I took some stones and put them in the bag in the house in which my father used to keep his wealth. Then I put a cloth over it, then I took it in my hand and said: "O grandfather, place your hand on this wealth." Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) says: He placed his hand on that wealth and then said: "If he has left this much for you, then there is no harm; he has done well. This will meet your needs." Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) says: By Allah, he had not left anything for us, but I wanted to reassure the old man in this way.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih, except Ibn Ishaq, and he has explicitly stated that he heard it directly.
