Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 9851

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Abu Talib passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Ta'if; he went there on foot. He invited those people to Islam, but they did not accept his invitation. As he was returning, he came to the shade of a tree and prayed two rak'ahs there. Then he made this supplication: "O Allah! To You I complain of the weakness of my strength and of my lowliness in the eyes of people. You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy. O Most Merciful of those who show mercy! To whom will You entrust me? To an enemy who will treat me harshly, or to someone near to whom You have given control over my affair? If You are not angry with me, then I do not care; yet Your well-being is more expansive for me. I seek refuge in the light of Your Countenance, by which the darknesses are illuminated and by which the affairs of this world and the Hereafter are set right, (I seek refuge) from Your anger descending upon me or Your displeasure befalling me. To You belongs the right to reproach until You are pleased, and nothing can happen without the help of Allah Almighty."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Ibn Ishaq, who is a mudallis and thiqah (trustworthy). The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
