Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 9298

Abdullah bin Sa'd bin al-Atwal narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to go out to his companions in Tustar to visit them. He would stay on the day he arrived, stay the next day, and leave on the third day. The people would say to him: "It would be better if you stayed longer." He would say: "I heard my father say: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from this; he forbade taking up residence outside the settled land, (saying) that whoever stays in a land of kharaj (land tax) becomes one who resides outside the settled land. So I dislike staying here."
Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a group of narrators whom I do not know.
