Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 8923

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, the Muslims looked for the best person among them and made him caliph, and he was Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Then when he passed away, the Muslims looked for the best person among them and made him their caliph, and he was Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are: when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred), the Muslims looked for the best person among them and made him caliph, and he was Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). If you kill him, then bring me someone better than him. By Allah, I do not think you will be able to do so.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Ali bin Hassan al-Attar, whom I do not know, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
