Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to say: "Who will be the most entitled of people to this matter (that is, the caliphate)?" We would say: "Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)." Then we would say: "What is your view: if Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passes away, who will be the most entitled of people to this matter (that is, rule)?" And we would say: "Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)." Then we would say: "What is your view: if Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passes away, who will be the most entitled to this matter?" And we would say: "Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)."
Imam Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Yusuf bin Khalid al-Samti, who is kadhdhab (a liar).
