Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) set out for Makkah to perform Hajj. The wife of Muhammad bin Ja'far bin Abi Talib came to him (that is, to Muhammad bin Ja'far), and he spent the night with his wife until, when morning came, the scent of perfume was rising from his body, and he had wrapped himself in a safflower-dyed (mu'asfar) cloth that was deeply dyed (mufaddam). He found the people at Malal before they had set off. When Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him, he rebuked him and said "uff" to him, and said: Are you wearing safflower-dyed clothing, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden it? Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: The Messenger of Allah did not forbid him or you from it; he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from it.
Ahmad recorded it, and Abu Ya'la in al-Kabir; al-Bazzar recorded it in abridged form. Its chain contains Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Mawhab, whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared thiqah (trustworthy) according to one report, though he has also been declared da'if (weak).
