Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I was one of ten people present in the mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), myself, and Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him). Meanwhile a man from the Ansar came, gave the greeting of peace and then sat down. After this the narrator mentioned the full hadith, further on in which are these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) to prepare for a military expedition; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had appointed him commander of that expedition. The next day he wore a black turban of coarse cloth (karabis) and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet undid his turban, tied his turban for him himself, and left its end hanging four fingers' length behind, or about that, then said: "O Ibn Awf! Tie your turban like this! This is more in keeping with the way of the Arabs and better." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he handed the banner to him. He praised Allah Almighty and sent blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn Awf! Take it, and fight together in the path of Allah; fight those who disbelieve in Allah. Do not break pledges and do not mutilate. This is the command of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning you." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah recorded part of this report.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain is hasan (good).
