وَعَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ أَنَّ عُمَرَ مَرَّ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَاشْتَكَى ذَلِكَ إِلَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ : مَرَرْتُ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ ، فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ ، فَقَالَ : أَيْنَ هُوَ ؟ قَالَ : هُوَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ قَاعِدٌ ، فَانْطَلَقَا إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَرُدَّ عَلَى أَخِيكَ حِينَ سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكَ ؟ قَالَ : وَاللَّهِ مَا شَعَرْتُ أَنَّهُ مَرَّ بِي ، وَأَنَا أُحَدِّثُ نَفْسِي فَلَمْ أَشْعُرْ أَنَّهُ سَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : فَمَاذَا تُحَدِّثُ نَفْسَكَ ؟ قَالَ : خَلَا بِي الشَّيْطَانُ فَجَعَلَ يُلْقِي فِي نَفْسِي أَشْيَاءَ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنِّي تَكَلَّمْتُ بِهَا وَإِنَّ لِي مَا عَلَى الْأَرْضِ ، قُلْتُ فِي نَفْسِي حِينَ أَلْقَى الشَّيْطَانُ ذَلِكَ فِي نَفْسِي : يَا لَيْتَنِي سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : مَا الَّذِي يُنْجِينَا مِنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ الَّذِي يُلْقِي الشَّيْطَانُ فِي أَنْفُسِنَا ؟ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : فَإِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لَقَدِ اشْتَكَيْتُ ذَلِكَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَسَأَلْتُهُ : مَا الَّذِي يُنْجِينَا مِنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ الَّذِي يُلْقِي الشَّيْطَانُ فِي أَنْفُسِنَا ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " يُنْجِيكُمْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ أَنْ تَقُولُوا مِثْلَ الَّذِي أَمَرْتُ بِهِ عَمِّي عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ فَلَمْ يَفْعَلْ " .
رَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى ، وَعِنْدَ أَحْمَدَ طَرَفٌ مِنْهُ ، وَفِي إِسْنَادِهِ أَبُو الْحُوَيْرِثِ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَثَّقَهُ ابْنُ حِبَّانَ وَالْأَكْثَرُ عَلَى تَضْعِيفِهِ . وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ .
رَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى ، وَعِنْدَ أَحْمَدَ طَرَفٌ مِنْهُ ، وَفِي إِسْنَادِهِ أَبُو الْحُوَيْرِثِ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَثَّقَهُ ابْنُ حِبَّانَ وَالْأَكْثَرُ عَلَى تَضْعِيفِهِ . وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ .
Muhammad bin Jubayr narrates: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), who was sitting in the mosque. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) greeted him with salam, but he did not reply. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and complained to him, saying: "I passed by Uthman and greeted him with salam, but he did not reply to me." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Where is he?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He is sitting in the mosque." The two of them went to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: "When your brother greeted you with salam, why did you not reply to him?" Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I did not even notice that he passed by me. I was lost in my thoughts, so I could not notice that he had greeted me." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What thoughts were you lost in?" Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When I am alone, Satan casts such thoughts into my mind that I would not like to speak about them, even if in return I were given everything on the face of the earth. When Satan casts such thoughts into my mind, I think to myself: If only I had asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what can deliver us when Satan produces such thoughts in our minds!" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this very thing, and I asked him (peace and blessings be upon him): 'What can deliver us from the thoughts Satan casts into our minds?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'What can deliver you from it is that you say the (word) which I told my uncle to say when he was about to die, and he did not do so.'"
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and Ahmad recorded part of it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abu al-Huwayrith Abd al-Rahman bin Mu'awiyah, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy), but most scholars have declared him da'if (weak). And Allah knows best.
