Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Muraffa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Khaybar, and with him were eighteen hundred men. Khaybar was divided into eighteen shares, each hundred men receiving one share. The narrator says: At that time there was an abundance of fruit there. The people ate it and were struck by fever. They complained of it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people! Indeed this fever is the forerunner (or vanguard) of death, and it is Allah's prison on earth; it is a piece of Hell. When it seizes you, cool it with the water in the water-skins, and pour that water over yourselves between the two prayers (the narrator says: that is, Maghrib and Isha)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Furayh bin Ubayd, and a narrator, al-Muhabbar bin Harun; I do not know either of them. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy). Some hadiths about fever have already passed before this in the chapter on funerals.
