Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 8346

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin al-Muraffa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went on the expedition of Khaybar with eighteen hundred men. He conquered Khaybar, and there was much fruit there. The people began eating it, and then they were struck by fever. They came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this to him, and he said: "Fever is the forerunner (or vanguard) of death, and it is Allah's prison on earth. So cool it with the water in the water-skins, and pour that water over yourselves between the two adhans, that is, the adhan of Maghrib and the adhan of Isha." (The narrator says:) They did so, and the fever left them. They came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, and he said: "No vessel, when filled, is worse than the stomach. If you must do so, then keep a third of it (that is, of the stomach) for food, a third for drink, and a third for air (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) for breath." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) divided Khaybar into eighteen shares.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, al-Muhabbar bin Harun, and I do not know him. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
