Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has opened a door in the direction of the west whose (width) is a distance of seventy years; it is reserved for repentance, and Allah Almighty will not close it until the sun rises from the west. Whenever a man goes out in pursuit of knowledge, the angels spread their wings for him, out of pleasure with what he is doing." On that occasion the Arabs said: O Messenger of Allah! Has Allah Almighty not given a servant some trait that is better? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is good character. Then the people said to him: O Messenger of Allah! Should we use medicine? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you know that the One who sent down disease also sent down medicine? He has not sent down any disease without also sending down a medicine for it, except for one disease. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! Which one is it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Old age." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Al-Tirmidhi and others recorded this report in abridged form, mentioning the use of medicine and good character.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abi Farwah, who is matruk (abandoned).
