Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Syria, he saw the Jews prostrating to their scholars and elders, and he saw the Christians prostrating to their religious leaders, monks and jurists. When he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he prostrated to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Mu'adh! What is the reason for this? He said: I went to Syria, and there I saw the Jews prostrating to their scholars and elders, and I saw the Christians prostrating to their priests, jurists and monks. I asked: What is the reason for this? They said that this is the way of greeting the prophets. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These people have attributed a lie to their prophets, just as they distorted their books. If I were to command anyone to prostrate to another, I would command the woman to prostrate to her husband.
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains al-Nahhas bin Qahm, and he is da'if (weak).
