Aslam, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) called Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and spoke with him privately. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) got up from there and came to the platform of the Suffah. There he found Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Aqil (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), and he consulted them about marrying Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her) to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Aqil (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and said: O Ali! The days, months and years only add to your blindness. By Allah! If you do this, then this will happen and that will happen, and he listed a number of things. Then he went off, dragging his garment. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): By Allah! This is not sincere counsel on his part; rather, it is Umar's whip that has driven him into the distress you have seen. By Allah, O Aqil! This is not out of any desire regarding you; rather, Umar bin al-Khattab told me that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "On the Day of Resurrection every tie and every lineage will be cut off, except my tie and my lineage." (When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) learned of this,) Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) laughed and said: Aqil is a most foolish simpleton.
At-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
