Atiyyah bin Qays al-Kala'i narrates: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a marriage proposal to Sayyidah Umm al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with her) after the death of Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyidah Umm al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I heard Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate; he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Any woman whose husband dies, and she marries someone else after him, will belong to her last husband." (Then Sayyidah Umm al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with her) said:) I will not choose anyone over Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to her: You must keep fasting, for it will burn it away (that is, it will end the desire for marriage).
At-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Abu Bakr bin Abi Maryam, who suffered from confusion (ikhtilat).
