Nafi', the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), states: A man asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), saying: "My maternal uncle has separated from his wife, and now he is grieved and troubled over the matter, and it weighs heavily on him. I have intended to marry that woman (and then divorce her to make her lawful again for my uncle). My uncle did not instruct me to do this, and he does not know about it." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "No! A marriage is only one entered with the intention of keeping it: if she suits you, you keep her, and if you dislike her, you separate. Nothing other than this. In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) we used to count this as fornication."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
