Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda', Sayyiduna Abu Umamah, Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' and Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with them) all narrate: "One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us while we were arguing about some religious matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became extremely angry; he had never been angry like this before. He (peace and blessings be upon him) rebuked us and said: O Ummah of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Stop! Those before you were destroyed because of this (arguing). Abandon arguing, for there is little good in it. Leave arguing, for the believer does not argue. Leave arguing, for the loss of the one who argues becomes complete. Leave arguing, for it is sin enough that you keep on arguing. Leave arguing, for I will not intercede on the Day of Resurrection for the one who argues. Leave arguing, for I guarantee three houses in Paradise, in its outskirts, in its middle and in its highest part (I guarantee the houses there for the person) who abandons arguing even though he is in the right. Leave arguing, for the first thing Allah Almighty forbade me after the worship of idols was arguing and drinking wine. Leave arguing, for Satan has despaired of being worshipped, but he will be content with disputes among you. Leave arguing, for the Children of Israel split into seventy-one sects and the Christians split into seventy-two sects; all of them were upon misguidance except the great majority (al-sawad al-a'zam). The people submitted: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by the great majority? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one who is upon that which I and my Companions are upon; the one who does not argue about the religion of Allah, and does not declare anyone from the people of tawhid (monotheism) a disbeliever because of committing a sin — that person will be forgiven. After this the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Islam began as something strange, and soon it will become strange again. The people submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Who are the strangers? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those who remain upright when the rest of the people have become corrupt, who do not argue about the religion of Allah, and who do not declare anyone from the people of tawhid a disbeliever because of committing a sin."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Kathir bin Marwan, and he is extremely da'if (weak).
