Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us to deliver a sermon, he commanded us to give charity and forbade us from mutilation (muthlah). On one occasion he said: "Part of mutilation is that a man vows to pierce his nose. Beware! Part of mutilation is that a man vows that he will go for Hajj walking on foot. (In such a case) let him take a sacrificial animal and ride." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Abu Dawud recorded this narration in abridged form, mentioning the piercing of the nose and walking on foot.
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Bazzar recorded something similar, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; the narrators of Imam Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih. The wording of Imam al-Tabarani is: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade mutilation, and he said: "Part of mutilation is that a man swears that he will go for Hajj tied with a rope or walking on foot; and whoever swears an oath about any such thing should give expiation for his oath and then ride."
