Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let me never find any one of you in such a state that a hadith comes to him on my authority while he is reclining on his cushion, and he says: 'Recite the Qur'an to me instead of this.' (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) Whatever good comes to you on my authority, whether I said it or did not say it, consider that I have said it; and whatever bad comes to you, I do not say what is bad."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Ibn Majah recorded this narration in abridged form, while Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Bazzar recorded it in full. Its chain contains a narrator, Abu Ma'shar Najih, whom Imam Ahmad and others declared da'if (weak), though he has also been declared trustworthy.
