Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to have Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) do his writing, and he would write the letters sent to the kings. He was so trusted in the sight of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he would write to some of the kings: he would write the letter, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would order him to seal it with clay and then stamp it with the seal; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not read it, because he was trusted in the sight of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Likewise the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also had Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) do writing; he wrote down the revelation and also wrote letters to the kings. Whenever Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) were absent and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) needed to send a writing (to one of the commanders of the armies or to a king), or to write a deed for a person granting him land, he would order one of those present to write it. Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab, Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib, Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit, Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah, Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan, Sayyiduna Khalid bin Sa'id bin al-As and others (may Allah be pleased with them all) performed the duties of writing for him. (The narrator says:) He named those other people, who were from among the Arabs.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Salamah bin al-Fadl al-Abrash, whom Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him), Ibn al-Madini and Abu Zur'ah declared da'if (weak), while Yahya bin Ma'in and Abu Hatim declared him thiqah (trustworthy).
