عَنْ أَبِي جَمِيلَةَ أَنَّهُ وَجَدَ مَنْبُوذًا عَلَى عَهْدِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فَأَتَاهُ بِهِ ، فَاتَّهَمَهُ ، فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهِ خَيْرًا فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : هُوَ حُرٌّ ، وَوَلَاؤُهُ لَكَ ، وَنَفَقَتُهُ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ بَيْتِ الْمَالِ . .
Abu Jamilah narrates: In the time of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), he found an abandoned child. He brought it to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) suspected him, (but when inquiry was made about him) he was spoken of well. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This child will be counted as free; his wala' (right of clientage) will be yours, and his maintenance will be our responsibility, from the public treasury (bayt al-mal)."
