Abu Jamilah narrates: In the time of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), he found an abandoned child. He brought it to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) suspected him, (but when inquiry was made about him) he was spoken of well. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This child will be counted as free; his wala' (right of clientage) will be yours, and his maintenance will be our responsibility, from the public treasury (bayt al-mal)."

In a report from al-Zuhri it is narrated: A man came to his family, having picked up an abandoned child. He went to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned it to him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Perhaps the little cave hides misfortune (that is, something seems amiss)." The man said: "When it was picked up, I was not present." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) made inquiries about the man, and he was spoken of well. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the man: "His wala' (right of clientage) will be yours, and spending on him from the public treasury (bayt al-mal) will be our responsibility." The narrators of all the routes of this report are the narrators of the Sahih, except the last report, which is different because it is "mursal".
