Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the time of the Battle of Uhud came, my father called me and said to me: "My thought about myself is that tomorrow I will be among the first of the companions of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to be martyred. I am not leaving behind anyone dearer to me than you, after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I owe some debt, and you have sisters; so accept my counsel to treat them well, and pay off my debt on my behalf." (Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:) He was among the first of the companions of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to be martyred. I buried him, and buried another man with him in one grave. I had some unease in my mind about his grave, so after six months had passed I took out his body, and it was just as it had been on the day I buried him, except that the place near his ear had changed somewhat. When we returned to Madinah, it was said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that a creditor of Sayyiduna Abdullah (Sayyiduna Jabir's father) was being harsh with Jabir. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, walking on foot ahead of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He said (to the creditor): "Take part of it, and defer part of it until the dates of next year come." The man refused. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was harsh with that man and said: "I see that the Messenger of Allah is telling you to take part of it and defer part of it, and still you refuse!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umar! Stop. The one who is owed a right also has the right to speak." Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) walked around the date palms, and then he said: "Pay him in full, and when you harvest the dates, let me know." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! My thought is that you should take your midday rest with us." I spread out bedding for him in our shelter, and then went to our goat to slaughter it. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went off to keep the people from coming to him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up, I presented the food to him, and he ate it. When he was about to leave, my wife put her head and face out from behind the curtain and said: "O Messenger of Allah! You are about to leave, and you have not made any supplication for us at all!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I consider this woman to be sensible" (the narrator is uncertain; perhaps the words are:) "more sensible than you." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for us and then left. When I harvested the dates, I paid in full, and still seven wasq were left over for us. I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him, and he said: "Call Umar bin al-Khattab to me." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ask him." He said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah! Had you not said, 'Ask him,' I would not have asked him, because I had come to know that the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would be blessed for him and would be answered in his favour." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) turned to me and asked me, and I told him the whole account. (Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:) When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became caliph, fixed the stipends, began recording names in the register, and appointed various people as 'arif (leaders over groups), he made me the 'arif over my companions. Then that man who had demanded payment came, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him a smaller share than his other companions. I spoke to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about it, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do you not remember what this man did regarding Abdullah's debt?" But I kept on speaking to him until Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) placed that man together with his companions as well. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This narration is recorded in the Sahih and in other books in abridged form.
At-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). He also recorded it through another chain, which is the narration recorded by Ahmad that has already passed.
