Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 6605

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: A woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! My son and I bought from a certain man the date crop (or orchard) of his land. We counted it and tended it. By the One who has honoured you, we got from it only as much as we could eat ourselves or feed to a poor person, hoping for blessing (that is, we suffered a loss). We asked him to reduce our payment in proportion to our shortfall, but he swore by the name of Allah that he would not reduce anything for us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware! Will he not do good?" He said this three times. The narrator says: News of this reached the owner of the dates, so he came and said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! If you wish, I will waive the payment in proportion to their loss, and if you wish, I will waive the payment of the whole amount, as you wish." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had the payment waived for them in proportion to their loss. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: There is also a hadith from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned in the Sahih, which is other than this report.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy); there is criticism about Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Rijal, but he is thiqah (trustworthy).
