Abu al-Ma'arik narrates: A man from Ghafiq was owed one hundred dinars by a man from Mahrah. This was in the time of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). They gained some spoils of war, and the man from Mahrah said: I will pay you seventy dinars right away on the condition that you write off the hundred for me, since the payment of those one hundred dinars was not yet due. The man from Ghafiq agreed to this. Sayyiduna al-Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by the two of them, and that man took hold of the bridle of his animal to stop him, then told him the whole matter. He said: Both of you have declared war against Allah Almighty and His Messenger.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. I have not found anyone who gives a biography of Abu al-Ma'arik, except that Imam al-Mizzi mentioned him in the biography of Ayyash bin Abbas and named him Ali Abu al-Ma'arik al-Wadi. The rest of the narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.
