Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I went out with anklets, wanting to sell them, because my family needed money for expenses. I saw Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he asked: Where are you going? I said: My family needs money for expenses, so I intend to sell these two anklets. He said: I too have come out with some dirhams, and I want to get finer silver than them in exchange. The narrator says: He put the anklets in one pan of the scale and the dirhams in the other pan, and the pan with the anklets was somewhat heavier than the one with the dirhams. So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) called for shears. I said: Subhan Allah, this much (must shears be called for such a small bit of silver?) It is yours. He said: Even if you leave it, Allah Almighty will not leave it. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Gold for gold is to be exchanged like for like, and silver for silver like for like; the one who pays extra and the one to whom extra is paid will both go to Hell."
Al-Bazzar and Abu Ya'la recorded it. Al-Bazzar's chain contains a narrator, Hafs bin Abi Hafs; Imam al-Dhahabi says: He is not strong. Abu Ya'la's chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin al-Sa'ib al-Kalbi; we seek refuge in Allah from the vile things that have been attributed to him.
