Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man used to carry wine from Khaybar to Madinah and sell it to the Muslims, earning money in return. Once he came to Madinah with wine, and a man from among the Muslims met him and said: "O so-and-so! Wine has been declared unlawful." So wherever he was, he placed the wine there on top of a mound and threw sheets over it. Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have learned that wine has been declared unlawful?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes!" He said: "Do I have the right to return it to the one I bought it from?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not right to return it." He said: "Do I have the right to give it as a gift to someone who will give me something in return for it?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No!" He said: "There is also some wealth in it belonging to orphans who are under my care." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the wealth of Bahrain comes to us, come to us and we will compensate you for the wealth of the orphans in your care." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had it announced: "O people of Madinah!" The narrator says: A man said: "O Messenger of Allah! There are also these vessels from which we benefit." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Untie their fastenings," until the wine flowed out and went into the low part (of the valley).
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded the meaning of part of this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. The chains of all of them contain Ya'qub al-Qummi and Isa bin Jariyah; both have been criticised, though both have also been declared trustworthy.
