Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates about a man from the Ansar: He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and complained to him of being in need. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you have anything?" So he brought him a saddle-blanket and a cup. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will buy this?" A man said: "I will take the two of them for one dirham." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will give more than one dirham?" The people remained silent. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will give more?" A man said: "I will take the two of them for two dirhams." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are yours." Then he said: "Begging is lawful only for one of three: (one burdened with) blood money that causes pain (that is, the blood money of a killing must be paid), a debt that is crushing, or poverty that brings one down to the dust." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Abu Dawud and others recorded it from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) from a man.
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tirmidhi declared its chain hasan (good).
