Sayyiduna al-Muqanna' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the zakah of our camels. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave an order concerning them, and they were taken into possession. I said: "Among them are two she-camels which are a gift for you." By the order of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the gift was separated from the charity. I stayed there for some days, and during that time the people kept talking among themselves that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to send Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) to the slaves of Misr (the narrator is in doubt, or perhaps the words are: to the slaves of Mudar; this doubt is from the narrator named Abu Ghassan) so that he could collect zakah from them. I said: "By Allah! Whatever wealth we and the people of our area have, I have paid its zakah here." Then I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He was at that time on his she-camel, and with him (peace and blessings be upon him) was a black man whose head was level with the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (in height); I have never seen anyone taller than him. When I began to come near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he moved towards me (to stop me from approaching the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held him back. I said: "The people are thinking such and such." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands until I saw the whiteness of his (peace and blessings be upon him) armpits, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah! I do not make it lawful for the people to attribute any lie to me." Sayyiduna al-Muqanna' (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I will narrate from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) only that hadith about which there is a command in the Book (that is, the Qur'an), or concerning which the Sunnah has become established. If a lie could be attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during his lifetime, then what will be the state after his (peace and blessings be upon him) passing?
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Sayf bin Harun al-Burjumi, and he is matruk (abandoned).
