Sayyiduna Abu Juhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: On the day of sacrifice, a man slaughtered an animal before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had offered the Eid prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has not been fulfilled on your behalf." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have a young (goat or sheep)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It will suffice on your behalf, but after you it will not suffice (on behalf of anyone)."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and Tabarani recorded something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; the narrators of all of them are thiqat (trustworthy).
