Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 5925

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was coming out of one of his houses, trailing his cloak, and he said: "Soon (the city) will reach Sal' (the mountain) on our side (that is, Madinah will spread). Then a time will come upon Madinah when a traveller will pass by it and will say: 'Once this town used to be inhabited,' that is, this will happen after a long time has passed and its traces have been effaced."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Ibrahim bin Abdullah bin Khalid al-Missisi, who is matruk (abandoned).
