Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The likeness of Madinah is that of a furnace. Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) declared Makkah a sanctuary, and I declare Madinah a sanctuary. Like Makkah, the area between its two stony tracts (harrahs) and all of its pasture is a sanctuary. Its trees shall not be cut, except that this may be done to obtain fodder. If Allah wills, neither the plague nor the Dajjal will come near it. The angels guard it at its mountain passes and its gates." He also narrated: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "It is not lawful for anyone to carry weapons in it for fighting." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Another hadith is reported from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) about the sanctity of Madinah, besides this one.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The opening part of this narration is reported in the "Sahih".
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, whose hadith is hasan (good), though he has been criticised.
